NIKKA extends its Coffey range with Gin and Vodka

Nikka Coffey Gin and Nikka Coffey Vodka arrive this fall to Portugal


Nikka, known worldwide for the production of Japanese whiskeys, now launches the first gin and vodka distilled according to the Coffey method. Nikka Coffey Gin and Nikka Coffey Vodka arrive in the Portuguese market this fall from the Miyagikyo distillery where the brand has two Coffey stills whose method is continuous distillation. Imported from Scotland in 1963, these ancient stills produce very round spirits, with a distinctive character that defines blends with Nikka signature.


The Nikka Coffey Gin is produced with 11 botanists where in addition to the traditional ones such as coriander, lemon peel, orange and apple juice, a group of Japanese citrus fruits such as yuzu, kabosu, amanatsu and shikuwasa are also included. The result is a rich gin, with a silky texture and an impressive aromatic complexity. The Nikka Coffey Vodka presents itself as the purest expression of the ‘Coffey’ style, capturing the soft and delicate flavor of corn and barley.


Having already had a long experience in the production of spirits, the company has been deepening the Coffey method. In 2012 it launched the ‘Nikka Coffey’ range with Nikka Coffey Grain whiskey and two years later with Nikka Coffey Malt. These continuous-style stills were developed by the Irishman Aeneas Coffey in 1830. Masataka Taketsuru, founder of the Nikka Whiskey Distilling Company, imported into Japan in 1963 Coffey stills starting production under this method.


The Nikka brand is the creation of the Japanese Masataka Taketsuro, born in the city of Takehara, 60km from Hiroshima. In 1919, Son of a family of Sake production was recruited by Settsu Shuzo Company to produce the first authentic Japanese Whiskey. With training in chemistry, the young man decides to leave for Scotland in order to discover all the secrets of the production of this spirit. Shortly before World War II, in 1952, Masataka Taketsuru founds Nikka Whiskey and establishes the production of its whiskeys in two currently functioning distilleries: Yoichi and Miyagikyo. Masataka Taketsuru is considered the true father of the Japanese Whiskie and his legacy remains alive through the striking products that Nikka produces.
