On November 15, 2016, Sotheby’s auctioned a unique and exclusive IWC watch.
Schaffhausen. The Big Pilot Calendar Annual Calendar edition “Le Petit Prince” with a single blue movement was auctioned for CHF 48,750. The proceeds go to the Antoine de St Exupéry Youth Foundation, an active organization around the world that supports children and young people living in difficult conditions.
The Big Pilot Calendar Annual Calendar edition “Le Petit Prince” is, so far, the only watch in the history of the IWC with a blue movement. The manufacturing process took a year and a half, from development to improvement. To give the IWC Caliber 52850 its stunning blue color, plates and bridges were covered with several layers of metallic oxides. The major challenge of this process was to maintain the thickness of the layers to achieve a uniform pitch through the vapor deposition technique (CVD). When combined with blue bolts and red gemstones, the blue movement creates the perfect background for the 18-carat red gold rotor depicting the little prince, from the story with the same name as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, on top of a planet to look at the starry sky.
